Hart McLaughlin & Eldridge is proud to announce a $5,000,000.00 settlement on behalf of the Estate of Ora Chiles following a wrongful death lawsuit arising from a devastating January 2023 high-rise apartment fire fatality. Led by Founding Partner Robert McLaughlin, Partner James Ormond, Associate Jay Kasperbauer, and Paralegal Imonica Jennings, the HME team remained relentless in uncovering the truth behind this tragedy. 

Through extensive investigation, our team uncovered a critical failure in property management: Ms. Chiles’ residence lacked a functioning smoke detector. This was a clear violation of the property’s own safety regulations, which expressly required management to provide and maintain working detectors in every unit. By neglecting these essential obligations, management failed to provide the most fundamental life-saving protection available. Ultimately, this failure deprived the Chiles family of their loved one, a loss that was as tragic as it was preventable. 

While no settlement can undo the profound loss suffered by the Chiles family, this resolution represents both meaningful financial recovery and a powerful statement of accountability. It underscores the responsibility property owners and housing providers bear in protecting the safety and lives of their residents.
