Carter Grant is an experienced trial attorney with extensive experience representing plaintiffs and defendants in a broad range of practice areas, including: personal injury, products liability, premises liability, civil rights, medical malpractice, nursing home, sex abuse, employment, class action, mass tort, business litigation, and asbestos and toxic tort. Carter also serves as co-chair of HME’s medical malpractice and nursing home litigation practice groups. As a civil litigator, Carter has tried multiple cases to verdict and successfully litigated multi-million-dollar cases for clients in complex litigation matters in numerous venues.
Carter received his undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin in 2007, and then his law degree from Loyola University Chicago School of Law in 2011. Carter then worked in civil litigation with a focus in toxic tort and asbestos litigation, before becoming a founding attorney at Hart McLaughlin & Eldridge in 2015.
Prior to practicing law, Carter served in Rahm Emanuel's Congressional Office in Washington, D.C. before working on his mayoral campaign for the City of Chicago in 2010-2011.

Carter’s professional accolades include being selected to Illinois’ Super Lawyers’ “Rising Star” lists in eight consecutive years in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024. The “Rising Star” distinction is reserved for no more than 2.5% of lawyers in the state under the age of 40.
- Settlement (Bodily Injury): Obtained $3,200,000 settlement on behalf of client involved in a vehicular versus pedestrian incident that resulted in a traumatic brain injury.
- Yoga Instructor Settlement (Class Action): Represented class of yoga instructors in a Wage & Hour case in federal court. The case alleged that instructors were unpaid for the extensive time required to prepare for class. After years of litigation and the successful certification of class, the case resolved the case for $1.492 million.
- Settlement (Bodily Injury): Obtained $500,000 settlement on behalf of client who was struck by another vehicle that failed to yield the right-of-way, and sustained a traumatic brain injury.
- Settlement (Medical Malpractice and Nursing Home): Obtained $425,000 settlement in multi-defendant medical malpractice and nursing home case on behalf of client who suffered severe sacral pressure ulcer.
- Confidential Wrongful Death (Bodily Injury): Represented the Estate of Noah Katz and his family in a negligent entrustment case against a third-party. The case resolved for full policy limits and umbrella coverage after nearly three years of hotly contested litigation. A separate settlement was reached in the case against the City of Chicago for its alleged failure to maintain the intersection.
- Appellate Victory (Employment): Prevailed on appeal in Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, overturning lower court’s grant of summary judgment in discrimination employment case.
- Appellate Victory (Business Litigation): Prevailed on appeal in both the First District Appellate Court and the Illinois Supreme Court in breach of contract case.
- Summary Judgment Victory (Bodily Injury): Prevailed on summary judgment on behalf of national real estate developer and property manager in tort case involving catastrophic injuries to the plaintiff.
- Administrative Law (Business Litigation): Negotiated dismissals of hundreds of City of Chicago citations, including alleged liquor license violations.
- Injunctive Relief Victory (Business Litigation): Obtained injunctive relief as part of settlement for a condominium association.
