Carter Grant

Carter D. Grant is an experienced trial attorney with extensive experience in the areas of asbestos and toxic tort litigation, class action, mass tort, products liability, premises liability, personal injury, employment, and business litigation. Carter also serves as co-chair of HME’s nursing home litigation practice group. As a civil litigator, Carter has tried multiple cases to verdict and successfully litigated multi-million dollar cases for clients in complex litigation matters in numerous venues.

Carter has served as national coordinating counsel and local counsel for several fortune 500 companies. Carter works with clients in assessing and analyzing risk, developing long-term strategies, and implementing case protocols. He provides a wide range of litigation services to all of his clients from initial analysis, pretrial workup, through resolution and trial. Carter understands the financial pressures placed on clients involved in litigation and has successfully crafted strategies to control costs and expenses.

Through his business licensing and administrative law practice, Carter has assisted Chicago area luxury hotels, restaurants, and bars in their efforts to obtain business licenses, including liquor licenses. Carter has also defended large retailers in administrative municipal hearings, obtaining full defense findings and reduced fines.

Carter’s professional accolades include being selected to Illinois’ Super Lawyers’ 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 “Rising Star” lists. The “Rising Star” distinction is reserved for no more than 2.5% of lawyers in the state.

Prior to practicing law, Carter served on Rahm Emanuel's mayoral campaign for the City of Chicago in 2010-2011. He also served in Mr. Emanuel's Congressional Office in Washington, D.C.

Carter lives in Chicago with his wife Elizabeth and daughters Sadie and Tessa.

Practice Highlights
  • Prevailed on all counts at trial on behalf of national developer and property manager in breach of contract case against elevator contractor.
  • Prevailed on summary judgment on behalf of national real estate developer and property manager in tort case involving catastrophic injuries to the plaintiff.
  • Prevailed on appeal in both the First District Appellate Court and the Illinois Supreme Court in breach of contract case.
  • Prevailed on motion to dismiss breach of employment contract involving various restrictive covenants.
  • Defeated co-defendant’s motion to dismiss counterclaims for failure to indemnify, defend, and procure sufficient insurance for property owner, which was subsequently leveraged for client’s dismissal.
  • Won summary judgment in U.S. Federal District Court in premises liability case.
  • Negotiated dismissals of hundreds of City of Chicago citations, including alleged liquor license violations.
  • Obtained $1,492,500 settlement in back wages and civil penalties on behalf of a nationwide class of yoga instructors.
  • Secured millions of dollars in settlements for plaintiffs in personal injury and employment cases.
  • Obtained injunctive relief as part of settlement for a condominium association.
